Individual Differences

Although the average human brain is better equipped for mammoth hunting than using websites, we're not all average. In fact, there are huge individual differences in user performance: the top 25% of users are 2.4 times better than the bottom 25%.

At the extreme, only about 4% of the population has enough brainpower to perform complex cognitive tasks such as making high-level inferences using specialized background knowledge. Most likely, you're in this elite group. And, worse yet, so are many other members of your Internet team. (And the rest are definitely in the top 25%, which is also much better than average users.)

That your own short-term memory may hold two more items than most users' might not seem like a lot. But if your website blocks off short-term memory slots by requiring users to remember extraneous information, a little extra STM capacity can make all the difference in usability. You still have enough spare slots to think about the product line, but if your customers exhaust their brain capacity, they'll find your site very frustrating indeed.

Even though it's a bad course title, it's a good overall mnemonic to design for cavemen and their literal-minded and limited-capacity brains. After all, your paying customers are only one step out of the cave.

Earth Crust Displacement 2012 & Charles Hapgood

2012 the Hollywood movie centralized its core theme around the mega-disaster scenario first expounded by Charles H. Hapgood whom was a professor of the history of science at Keene College in New Hampshire. In this theory the entire crust of the planet Earth moves as one piece displacement of the physical poles into new locations would occur.

The most vocal modern researcher of the theory is Patrick Geryl. Mr Geryl insists that the Maya and Egyptians knew of this phenomenon and predicted it for 21-12-2012. Actually an enormous chunk of the 2012 movie seems to be lifted from his work. For those not familiar with him he has stated that the safest place on Earth will be the Drakensburg Mountains of South Africa. It is then likely no coincidence then that the closing scenes of the film has the survivors on course for that precise location!

In his research project Hapgood found the various ancient maps of the world that depict a very different planet which included a lost land mass (such as the infamous Piri Reis map). These often depict some geographic areas as ice free, for example Antarctica, which should of course not be in human history. Ancient maps should not be depicting such things, in fact Antarctica was not ‘officially’ discovered until 1820.

Crust plates move [plate tectonics] over time so we do know the Earth crust is unstable. The current consensus is that this is a very slow geological process which takes millions of years to produce even barely observable changes.

Hapgood sought out a mechanism that could explain radical shifts and changes of polar locations. His theory sought to explain a crust shift of some 30 degrees in a short period of time. No easy feat!

It was written by Dylan Moran, Graham Linehan, Arthur Mathews, Kevin Cecil and Andy Riley and produced by Nira Park. When surveying the goals of transhumanists, I found it striking how heavily many of them favor conventional engineering. This seems inefficient and inelegant, since such engineering reproduces slowly, clumsily and imperfectly, what biological systems have fine-tuned for eons, from nanobots (enzymes and miRNAs) to virtual reality (lucid dreaming).

Recently, I was reading an article about memory chips. In it, the primary researcher makes two statements that fall in the "not even wrong" category: "Brain cells are nothing but leaky bags of salt solution," and "I don't need a grand theory of the mind to fix what is essentially a signal-processing problem."

And it came to me in a flash that many transhumanists are uncomfortable with biology and would rather bypass it altogether for two reasons, each exemplified by these sentences. The first is that biological systems are squishy — they exude blood, sweat and tears, which are deemed proper only for women and weaklings. The second is that, unlike silicon systems, biological software is inseparable from hardware. And therein lies the major stumbling block to personal immortality.
